Weekend Signoff :)

(I am so incredibly looking forward to this weekend, which I plan to use practicing my new Nikon D5000 camera! Yesterday evening was spent at a fundraising event benefiting the Arctic Children and Youth Foundation, the first of many events to celebrate the Year of the Inuit; many wonderful performances took place, notably by 3-time Juno Award winner, Susan Aglukark and spoken word artist, Taqralik Partridge. Have found that I am quite drawn to spoken word performances, a medium which perfectly captures the lives of Northerners and spirit of Canada's North. Happy, happy weekend to each of you... a huge welcome to new followers!! {356 from 344 last weekend, WOW} and let us all unite and send donations towards Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts. (I don't know where to start... this amazing print is from Toronto artist Ian Amell, represented by Tinku Gallery in Toronto, Canada. Ian's print is one of a collection carefully edited by gallery owner Tinku. If you are in search of a blog that has all the writings of an intelligent, eloquent and warmly insightful individual, I strongly encourage you to read Tinku's blog. Not only will you be kept abreast of emerging Canadian artists represented by her, you'll also get to know more about art and the gallery owner herself. As for the artist, Ian Amell, the limited edition print above is one of a collection currently available for purchase. Hmmm...a wonderful Christmas present for a special someone, n'est pas?)

Canadian Artist, Jeanie Riddle

(There's something about black in art that attracts me. I think it is probably because it is so unexpected. In the first instance, the scale of the blob does it for me. In the second, it's the dripping. This Artist was made known to me via Art MoCo. Here's what they had to say: "Montreal artist Jeanie Riddle was one of the twelve semi-finalists in Royal Bank of Canada's Tenth Annual Painting Competition. Riddle seeks out ideas from the life that surrounds her, but fixated on the notion of economy, she is able to distill her inspiration into simple forms. Scale plays an important role in Riddle's canvases, and indeed Yellow is a bold statement at 72" x 72". A large dark shape escapes from its field of yellow, unlike some of the other (not all) works in the same series that remain contained, dripping quietly.")

Canadian Artist, Biliana Velkova

(OMG, this artist strikes so many cords all at once. Not only is she Canadian, but her art, as shown above, feeds my uncontrollable and inexplainable giddiness when near all things fashion designer-made; even when represented in art! Unfortunately, I can't take credit for discovering Biliana Velkova, a very talented Vancouver-based artist on the internet. I read about her in Canada's September Fashion Magazine "Flare", by Elio Iannacci (thanks Flare!). Biliana's work examines consumerist culture by exploring motifs of glamour, kitsch and brand names. She searches ways to fit these references into her everyday reality by way of performances and social interventions. Biliana is represented by Jeffrey Boone Gallery in Vancouver and will be exhibited at the Toronto International Art Fair, October 2-6, 2008. Biliana has her own blog here. P.S.
