Happy Canada Day!

{Happy Canada Day, dear fellow Canadians! I braved the crowds this morning, at two locations, during the new citizens' ceremony in Gatineau, Quebec and then on Parliament Hill, Ottawa, for the Duke's speech to Canadians, to try to get a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on their first Royal Tour and first visit to Canada for Kate... tried as I could, I didn't get any worthwhile photographs... hoping you are enjoying yourselves on this gorgeous Canada Day... now back to the festivities with family, then back downtown to watch the fireworks!}

Happy Birthday Canada!

(Canada is celebrating its 142nd anniversary of Confederation today... On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1^st.)

(Congratulations to the finalist of this year's Canada Day Poster Challenge, 15 year old Allison Forseille from Saskatchewan (Saskatoon). In her words Allison describes her poster: "The cheering fans are not only welcoming the world and Olympians to Canada, but they are also cheering for the pure beauty that our country has to offer. Happy Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Quebec!

(Every year, on the 24th of June, all Québécois get together with friends and family to celebrate their Fête Nationale (National Holiday); la Saint-Jean-Baptiste. The event originated more than 2000 years ago, in pre-Christian Europe, as the pagan celebration of the summer solstice. It was originally held on the 21st, but with the arrival of Christianity, it transformed into Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, and moved to the 24th. The two events did have several things in common after all. Both celebrated the symbol of "light"; the sun of the summer solstice and Saint-Jean-Baptiste who opens the way for the light of Jesus-Christ. The ancients used to light a great bonfire on the evening of the 24th to honour the sun, a tradition that continued into the Middle Ages. Also, this year marks the 400th anniversary of Quebec City.
