Inspiration: Red Lipstick Guide for Fall 2009

{a special excerpt from one of Canada's leading fashion magazines, Fashion Magazine...}

{’80s decadence in fuchsia-red. As seen at: Gucci, Sonia Rykiel, Vivienne Westwood Red Label, Sportmax and Issa. Wear it: Bold and bright. “Go big or go home. Don’t be afraid to wear colour and play up your features. Just remember that shape is very important here, so sculpt those cat eyes and contour cheekbones before painting on your fuchsia lip,” says Wencel. Try: Rimmel Renew Lipstick ($7) in “Funtime Fuchsia,”  Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick ($10) in “Fuchsia Fusion,” and Cover Girl Continuous Color Lipstick ($7, all at drugstores) in “Fabulous Fuchsia.” }

{Goth redux in berry-red. As seen at: Diesel Black Gold, Costume National, Giorgio Armani, John Richmond and Erin Fetherston. Wear it: Thick and lacquered. “It’s not the easiest of looks to wear, but if done properly, it will be a showstopper,” says Wencel. “Keep the rest of your makeup and hair very clean and simple so you don’t look too theatrical.” Try: Chanel Rouge Allure Lip Lacquer ($39, at department stores) in “Dragon,” DuWop lipstick ($25, at Shoppers Drug Mart) in “Private Red,” and  Cover Girl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor ($11, at drugstores) in “Burgundy.”}

{Bold statement in berry-red. As seen at: Christian Dior, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Givenchy, Chapurin and Luca Luca. Wear it: Matte, dabbed on with your finger, and paired with a neutral cream eyeshadow, says Greg Wencel, celebrity hair and makeup artist for Cover Girl. “Playing with textures is what makes this look modern. The sheer sheen on your eyes will make them stand out, without overpowering the depth of your matte lip.” Try: Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain ($10, at drugstores) in “Wild Berry Wink,” Guerlain KissKiss Baby ($35, at department stores) in “Red Nude,” and  L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lip Colour ($11, at drugstores) in “Classic Wine.”}

{Classic cool in blue-red. As seen at: Dolce & Gabbana, Elie Saab, L’Wren Scott, Alexander McQueen and J. Mendel. Wear it: Perfectly applied, like the “ultimate classic looks worn by screen sirens, from Marilyn to Madonna,” says Wencel. “Pair with liquid black eyeliner and fresh, glossy skin to keep this look from being too retro.” Try:  Lancôme Color Fever Matte ($32, at department stores) in “Red Avant-Garde,” Cover Girl Continuous Color Lipstick ($7, at drugstores) in “Classic Red,” and Dior Sérum de Rouge ($40, at department stores) in “Crimson Serum.” }

{Fresh glamour in orange-red. As seen at: Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Yohji Yamamoto, Iceberg, Moschino and Ruffian. Wear it: Layered, with multiple coats. “Balance the orange lip with a bold set of brows, and keep the rest of your makeup to a bare minimum to create the look of perfect symmetry,” advises Wencel. Try: Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick ($13) in “Stellar Sunrise,” Cover Girl Continuous Color Lipstick ($7, both at drugstores) in “Really Red,” and M.A.C Lustre Lipstick ($17, at the Bay) in “Surprise Me.”}
